Cimbali supports thriving northern coffee scene

26 September, 2014

La Cimbali is showing its commitment to the thriving northern coffee scene by sponsoring the inaugural Cup North, the first major coffee festival to take place outside of London, which is coming to ArtWork in the Greengate area of Salford on 1st-2nd November.

Cup North is curated by Hannah Davies, an experienced barista trainer and industry expert, and her team of Manchester coffee professionals, including Ricardo Gandara, a coffee fanatic and solid member of Manchester’s foodie scene. Hannah says, “I was inspired to create a coffee event in Manchester after a recent influx of speciality coffee shops, such as Takk, Grindsmiths, Caffeine & Co. The current foodie buzz surrounding the city was also a motivation.”

Numerous activities are planned over the two day festival including a latte art competition, coffee cuppings from leading coffee roasters such as Grumpy Mule, Extract and Atkinsons, live music, food and drink pairing, a coffee book corner and history talks with coffee fiction writer Pier Aexander,  live coffee roasting by Square Mile and an art exhibition by the Makers Dozen.  Coffee companies will showcase their products alongside tea merchants, chocolate suppliers, brewers and food traders.

Rob Ward, Cimbali’s coffee expert says he is “delighted that Cimbali is playing such a significant part in the evolving northern coffee scene by supporting the first ever Cup North event.  Artisan coffee is really taking off and we are seeing some fantastic places opening up in Manchester, Leeds and Harrogate echoing the very best of what’s on offer in London.”

Cimbali will showcase their award winning M100 HD with integral pressure profiling system which allows the barista to maximise the flavour characteristics of the coffee by adjusting the pressure at any time during the extraction process.  Plus the M34 PGS,  Cimbali’s newest addition to traditional espresso machines with self-adjusting grinder.  “As any barista will know, ‘grinder checks’ have to be done on a regular basis to ensure that the quality of the finished drink is maintained through the day.  When staff are busy, this often gets forgotten about.  As a result the quality of the espresso can deteriorate.  PGS technology eliminates the need for these regular checks because it adjusts the grind automatically as required. Perfect tasting espresso is therefore guaranteed irrespective of the skills of the barista.”

Cimbali has teamed up with Dark Woods, a new Huddersfield based artisan roaster created by the well known coffee experts; Damian Blackburn, Ian Agnew and Paul Meikle Janney who will be serving three distinct espresso blends at the festival:  Under Milk Wood: a rich bodied coffee with caramel overtones from Brazilian, Indian and Ethiopian origins; the fruity and jammy flavoured, Arboretum from a Costa Rican, Guatemalan and Kenyan bean; plus, a natural coffee,  Eleta, from Panama which is a high grade, lightly roasted coffee with sweet, fruit flavours.
